Do You Still Need Microspikes in the Catskills?

The short answer – as of March 19th, is that you should absolutely still carry traction devices with you on trails in the Catskills.

Even though there have been several warm days in the last week, some trails, particularly those going over 2,500 ft. elevation, are a sheet of ice. Trails are typically at their iciest in the springtime, when the constant freeze and thaw cycle turns previously packed down snow into ice. Of course, this can vary greatly throughout the Catskills, as they cover a huge area. Southern areas may be free of ice, but trails in the Northern Catskills, such as Kaaterskill Falls, the Devils Path and Escarpment trails still contain icy sections of trail.

At Upstate Hiking, we’re often using microspikes on parts of the trails up through late April. They’re one of the items that it’s better to have and not need, than to need and not have!

Luckily, you can find them for sale at most outdoor and sporting goods stores. Some great local shops that have them for sale are –

Our favorite all-around microspikes are made by Hillsound Equipment, but Kahtoolas work great too. We recommend avoiding off-brand models from places like Amazon or Temu, as they regularly break after a few uses, meaning that you’ll have to buy a second pair and lose most of the savings versus the name brands.

And, if you don’t want to rent or are unsure of heading out on your first winter or spring hiking trip – just book a hike with Upstate Hiking – where all of the gear is included!
